A powerful earthquake hit eastern Russia last week. Citing scientists, various media outlets in the country say that the Krashennikov volcano erupted for the first time in 600 years due to the impact of the earthquake. The Krashennikov volcano is located on the Kamchatka Peninsula. There are several volcanoes there, including this one. There is a special organization to deal with eruptions at these volcanoes. It is the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Team. The head of the organization, Olga Girina, told the state-owned RIA news agency, “The Krashennikov volcano has erupted after 600 years. This is the first confirmed volcanic eruption in history.’

A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday. It was the strongest to hit the region since 1952. The quake was so powerful that a tsunami warning was issued from French Polynesia to Chile. Immediately after the quake, the most active volcano in Kamchatka, Klyuchevskoye, erupted. According to Olga Girina, the impact of the earthquake was also the reason behind the eruption of Krashennikov.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Services said in a statement yesterday that the height of the Krashennikov volcano is 1,856 meters. After the eruption yesterday, ash was seen flying up to a maximum height of six kilometers. The ash plume was heading east towards the Pacific Ocean. However, there is no danger as there are no settlements nearby.
